Hello!
How are you doing today?
I am getting pretty amped about Surf City this weekend!
This will be my first half marathon since my horrific bonk in Fresno at the Two Cities Half Marathon last November.
Ugh.
It was terrible.
After reviewing my training log from 2015, I realized how consistently inconsistent I was.
My motivation fluttered in and out quite frequently.
Some weeks would be great!
I would do speedwork,
I would run hills,
and I would rock my long runs.
But then I would take two days off and that would turn into
three days,
four days,
and sometimes even five days off.
DOH!
And I would have to start all over again.
It was a sucky feeling.
I just couldn’t seem to get it together.
I knew going into 2016 that I was going to have to make a change.
As much as I am proud of what I accomplished last year, I couldn’t keep floating along and expect to achieve the goals I had set for myself.
I had to start getting uncomfortable.
The first step was to hire a coach.
My coach, Michelle, is exactly what I needed.
Being the control freak that I am, I struggled with handing my training over to her.
I had to severely back off my mileage during the first few weeks.
Back off on miles?
No.. no.. no.
I was trying to increase my mileage, not decrease it.
What if…
What if…
What if…
My mind spun in a million different directions.
It was the most uncomfortable feeling.
But eventually, I began to be comfortable with this feeling.
I started being comfortable with being uncomfortable.
I let go.
After a month of having a coach, I can tell you that it was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
Her approach is very straightforward.
She loads my workouts into a calendar once a week…
and I get it done.
There are no negotiations.
There is no whining.
There are no exceptions.
If coach tells you to run 8.5 miles on a Tuesday with 4.5 miles of speedwork in the middle…
You do it.
It might be uncomfortable, but you do it.
If coach tells you to do 20 minutes of strength training after said 8.5 miles…
You do it.
It might be uncomfortable, but you do it.
January was filled with plenty of uncomfortable moments.
I know that pushing through those uncomfortable moments is the only way I am going to achieve my goals.
So… I must remain comfortable with being uncomfortable.
Bring it February.
I am ready for you.
Bring it Surf City.
I am ready for you.
Let’s get uncomfortable.
Great post! Have been struggling with huge training inconsistencies since completing my first race. I’m trying to put my finger on a solution as my speed and stamina (yep, and motivation a little) is all over the place at the moment! I’ll take the theme of this post and “run with it!” (pun intended!)

Good luck this weekend, you are going to rock it!!!
And love this post – I always run in the mornings, before most of the world is awake, which means most of the world won’t see me… but it’s been so cold, I haven’t run since Monday, and this afternoon it was so pretty – but super windy, and daylight so people would see me… but I did it anyway. I decided to just run the short route, no matter who saw me. And I was uncomfortable at first, but felt great at the end! Happy to come in and read this – really spoke to me today, thank you!

I hired a coach for my first marathon this coming May, and I totally know what you mean about freaking out about handing over control. She started me out running at paces that I considered “too slow” for me, and running more times a week than I usually run, and initially I freaked, but I’m just trying to trust her and the process. So far, so good! Good luck at Surf City!
