Yes, you read that right and no, I am not being sarcastic.
I did not bump my head, I am not drunk, and this is NOT a figment of your imagination.
I actually had FUN on my 15 mile long run this weekend.
Seriously.
I am not joking!
How in the hell could someone possibly have fun running alone for 3 hours on a Sunday?
Let me show you…
I woke up on Sunday morning at 4 am and I was a little stressed about my long run.
So I decided to throw caution to the wind, get out of my normal routine, and have fun!
It was a great idea.
I went back to sleep around 6 am, woke up at 10, and put together my genius plan.
I broke the 15 mile run down into 5 three mile loops in different areas around my neighborhood.
I had three water bottles chilling in the refrigerator, and set aside a margarita Shotblok for each loop.
(I love margarita Shotbloks, by the way)
The great thing about this plan was that I was never too far away from water, the bathroom, or anything else that I might need.
I actually had to do a wardrobe change in the middle of the run because the Oiselle outfit I was wearing was annoying me.
I was so thankful to be close to my house!
After every “lap” I took a short break, drank some water, and crossed the route off of my list.
It was awesome.
It was also nice to only have “short” laps to do instead of one huge lap.
I tried to focus on the current lap I was on- which definitely made the time go by faster.
Before I knew it, my long run was done and I checked the final loop off of my list.
Surprisingly enough, I was totally not paying attention to my splits during this run.
I have a tendency to be totally pace-oriented, even on slow runs, which can get me into trouble.
So, I was completely shocked when I finished and realized that I had run waaaaaaaaaaaaay faster than I should have…
Ummmmm, yeah.
As a point of reference, this is probably the 2nd fastest half marathon (plus 1.9 miles) I have run since 2013.
Crazy right?
Needless to say, I was pretty stoked when I finished.
And I may or may not have shed a few tears.
15 miles is a big number for me.
2 years ago, when I was not running because of my stupid injury, I never dreamed I would be here now.
I never thought that I could possibly run another marathon.
No way Jose.
To celebrate this monumental occasion, I did something crazy…
I finally signed up for the San Francisco Marathon.
Obviously, I have been planning on running it…
But I was afraid.
I was afraid to make the jump, because I was afraid that I couldn’t actually do it.
But!
Now I know that I can do it.
I am no longer afraid.
I am ready to take on the marathon again.
Let’s do this.
So so so so so much awesome!!!! My happy read this morning! Congrats 🙂

Good work, that was a great run and so exciting to sign up for a marathon. I could never do a long run in laps near my house as I’d find it so hard to just pack it in after the first or second lap. I need to run far away from my house so that the only way back home is to run there! Glad to hear it works so well for you though 🙂

It does, but takes a lot of mental strength. I did want to quit, but knew I had to finish! 🙂 Thanks for reading this post!

Congrats on your big FUN run! I’m at week five postpartum recovery and I can’t wait for my doctor to clear me to start working out again. I’ve probably got a year of straight uphill training until I’ll get to 15 miles, but can’t wait. Reading this just made me that much more anxious to get moving!

I am so glad to motivate you. I started from ground zero after an injury in 2014, so I know what it is like to have to start over. If I can do it, you can too!

This is awesome!!! I love it! I may need to implement something like this. I always try to focus on the mile I’m on, but one big loop or out and backs can seem so daunting!

I love running close to home. My stepmom and I trained for a half together and ran different areas of her neighborhood, and we were never more than a few miles from her house. Its a great plan!

First off, way to freaking go!! Your run and mentality is amazing! I know running is a mental battle but the way you broke it down, it makes perfect sense. You made something huge looks not as scary. I love it!! You can do a marathon and you will be amazing! Keep it up 🙂

Awesome job!!!! Love the fact of breaking down the distance to make it easier, that’s exactly what I did for my 20 miler, at most I was about 5K away from my house.

Congrats on your 15! Love this advice. I tend to mentally break down my long runs in to 5k’s but never thought of writing it down. Motivating!
