Hello there!
It’s January.
(duh)
And as you know, this is when everyone starts talking about their New Years Resolutions.
Many have goals to get fit, lose weight, become a runner, etc. etc….
With the new year in mind, I have decided to let the cat out of the bag.
You are probably thinking “Whaaaaaaatttttt is this crazy lady talking about?”
I am here to tell you…
hand to my heart,
seriously no joke,
swear on a Bible…
THE TRUTH ABOUT RUNNING.
As I usually like to do…
So let’s cut the crap, people.
Today, I am talking to YOU, my newbie friend.
The one who is embarrassed to run outside, or at the gym, or on the track.
The one who gets winded after a few minutes, or is forced to take walk breaks.
The one who can only run to the end of the block.
Yes, I am talking to you.
I have something to tell you, so listen up!
You are a runner.
I don’t care if you can only run for 5 seconds at a time.
You are a runner.
Say it with me now…
And it’s the truth.
To be a runner…
There is no distance qualification or endurance test.
You don’t have to have a fancy watch, or expensive running shoes.
You don’t have to be a certain height or weight.
That is all there is to it.
It’s pretty simple.
Just run and you are runner.
Seriously.
Be proud!
You have officially joined a super secret (not really) group of bad asses.
We like each other because we share a common interest… running.
We don’t care if you are rich or poor,
socially awkward or super cool,
are a CEO or a janitor.
We don’t care if you have run a marathon,
or if you even know how far a marathon is.
It doesn’t matter.
All that matters is that you run.
So, the next time someone calls you a runner… agree with them.
And do it with pride.
Love this! We runners are like family!

Hats he hardest thing to get your head around isn’t it. I run and have done for years but still don’t say “im a runner”
A friend once said to me “if you have a race coming up, you aren’t running. You are training ”
Either way I couldn’t live without it in my life
Great advice

This was lovely to read; really motivational! I’ve only just started running and I’m still very much at the “run where no one can see you and don’t tell anyone” stage! Thank you for kind words that have lifted my spirits as I begin my third run this week 🙂

I am so glad to hear that. Best of luck to you on your journey!

Yes! Exactly right 😉 I was that girl once upon a time -running only when and where no one would see me, hiding under lots of clothes… Think I’m a runner now 😀

I started running in September 2015 and completed 7 5k runs last year, with a lot of walking and huffing and puffing along the way. I kept saying I wasn’t a runner or I was working on learning to be a runner. I love this post because it reminds me I am what I never dreamed I could be. A runner! I’m slow and I walk a lot but I’m still a runner! Thanks for the reminder.

True story!
And to prove it – I only started about 18 months ago, running at night, struggling to get 2 k’s done, plenty walking breaks inbetween. And it took me MONTHS (trust me, it’s better that way!) to gradually build up to a 5k! Amd worst is – I am a fit, since I am an active cyclist…
If you run, you’re a runner. And to add the old one – no matter how slow you go, you’re lapping everybody one the couch!

i was thinking after finishing my run today, i could only run a meager mile. 😦 And i come see this post and i am like ” I RAN A MILE TODAY” 🙂

Nope! A mile is A MILE! I am proud of you! Just keep doing what you are doing… Eventually you will run two, then three. But celebrate where you are! It’s an accomplishment!

Right on! Are you running? you’re a runner. I doesn’t matter if your mile is 6 minutes or 16, it’s still a mile.
Embrace what you are and have fun with it.
By that same token I guess I’m a cyclist since I bike to and from work, but I prefer to stick with “runner”.

YES!! I love this!!! It took me awhile before I finally called myself a “RUNNER” but it’s true…if you run, you are a runner!

I hate running in front of people. I feel awkward. Some days I’m winded after 30 seconds some days I can run a solid mile before I feel the need to take a quick walk break. I sit at work wondering what time the employee gym will clear out so I can go. I run outside with my hat low in front of my face. Thank you for posting this. You rock!

I used to be exactly like that. I ran at night, or early in the morning so no one would see me. I promise you, no one is judging you…if anything they are rooting you on!
